108 EWS seats unfilled in 17 pvt schools,18 yet to submit details

A total of 108 seats under the Economic Weaker Section (EWS) quota have not been filled in 17 unaided private schools in the city,information submitted by these schools to the UT Education department has revealed.

A total of 108 seats under the Economic Weaker Section (EWS) quota have not been filled in 17 unaided private schools in the city,information submitted by these schools to the UT Education department has revealed. The 17 institutions,however,are the only ones of 35 schools in the city to hand over all requisite data regarding the EWS category: number of admissions made so far and number of seats lying vacant.

All 35 city private schools were supposed to submit the information before 2 pm on April 12 at the the office of the District Education Officer (DEO) in Sector 19. On whether action would be taken against the 18 schools who have not handed over the information,DEO Ram Kumar Sharma said:

“We will take up the matter with higher authorities like the Director Public Instructions (DPI) (Schools) and the education secretary. There we can say what all we need to do.”

On March 28,the education department had forwarded 227 applications — submitted by EWS families seeking to admit their wards in private chools — to the schools directing them to provide them admission. Even after this exercise,the unaided private schools have good number of seats lying vacant under this category.

Only Ryan International Public School in Sector 49 and and Chandigarh Baptist School,Sector 45,have filled all their EWS seats.

As per official information,DAV Public School in Sector 8 has six EWS seats for nursery admissions,as per the RTE Act. Of these,three are still lying vacant. The UT education department,however,had sent two applications to this school. The applications are sent when parents specifically ask for a certain school.

In others like Ankur School in Sector 12,around 25 EWS seats,of the total 38 here,are still unfilled even as the department has forwarded 10 application to the school. Similarly,Shishu Miketan Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 22,has 27 EWS seats for nursery admissions. After the department sent six applications,the institution filled only one of those seats,leaving 26 vacant. Another branch of this school in Sector 43 has 24 EWS seats. While there were 21 seats unfilled,the number reduced to 16 after the institution filled eight seats; the department had sent nine EWS applications here.

In Banyan Tree School,Sector 48,of the eight EWS seats,three are vacant. Similarly,at the MDAV High School,Sector 22,of the 13 EWS seats,five are still lying vacant.

The Modern Ways Model School,Sector 29,has four unfilled EWS seats as opposed to its maximum intake of 10 under this category. The UT education department had sent two EWS applications each to both these schools.
