The district sessions court on Wednesday granted the Narmada district police three-day custody of AAP state working president and Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava’s personal assistant Jitendra and a farmer, Ramesh Vasava, arrested in an alleged case of extortion and assault of forest officials.
The court, which was scheduled to hear the bail petition of Jitendra, Ramesh as well as Chaitar’s wife Shakuntala – who has also been arrested in the case – first considered the revision petition filed by the police on November 4, after the local court rejected its police remand application a day earlier.
While the bail plea of Shakuntala, Jitendra and Ramesh was listed for hearing, the sessions court preferred to hear the polices revision petition as per procedure.
Narmada SP Prashant Sumbe said, “In case of a revision petition seeking remand, it has to be given preference over the bail plea… So, the court heard our petition first although it was listed for Thursday…” “The court granted three-days police custody of Jitendra and Ramesh Vasava, as against the 10 days sought by the police,” he added.
Shakuntala, who has been in judicial custody since the night of November 3, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after she complained of chest pain. Sumbe said the police will separately move sessions court seeking her custody once she is discharged.
The sessions court will now hear the bail plea on Thursday.
The police, meanwhile, continue to look for Chaitar, who has been evading arrest since November 2. “We are on the lookout for the MLA… No look out notice has been issued against him as of now,” said Sumbe.
Chaitar, Shakuntala, Jitendra and Ramesh, along with four others, were booked on November 2 after the MLA allegedly threatened forest officials and fired one round in the air with a weapon at his residence on October 30.
