As the National Education Policy (NEP) turns 3 on July 29, directors of top central institutions outlined NEP implementation progress on Tuesday but avoided making comments on the Karnataka government’s plan to withdraw it.

The distinguished panel at IISc Bengaluru included IISc Director Prof Govindan Rangarajan, IIM Bangalore Director Rishikesha Krishnan, IIT Dharwad’s Narayan S Punekar, Kendriya Vidyalaya’s Dharmendra Patle and others.

They listed academic interventions taken in line with NEP that have transformed India into a “vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower through broad-based, flexible and multidisciplinary education.”

However, the panel did not address Karnataka’s NEP withdrawal or uneven implementation in state universities and private colleges. “Since they don’t fall under my domain, I don’t want to comment on the politics involved,” said Rangarajan.

He added that NEP’s multidisciplinary approach will attract more students to science to address real-world issues like water pollution and health.

On universities struggling with NEP due to lack of infrastructure and faculty, Rangarajan said, “NEP definitely takes time to implement. In terms of recruiting qualified faculty it is also difficult, especially to teach multidisciplinary courses. Traditionally science, engineering demands us to go deep into the discipline. It’s a long term process. As more and more students graduate, we expect them to return as faculty members and then we will see more people coming into teaching with a strong background.”

IISc has started a 4-year multidisciplinary BSc (Research) programme under NEP. It is also establishing a postgraduate medical school with MD-PhD and MPH degrees.

IIM-B’s multidisciplinary curriculum exposes students to languages, arts, culture, society, and policy. It offers courses on Bhagavad Gita and Hindu philosophy. Its new campus will have 4-year UG programmes with a 3-year exit option, in line with NEP’s multiple entry multiple exit guidelines.

Patle also said that Kendriya Vidyalayas added kindergarten classes after NEP’s launch.
