National Science Day: Institutes across India to host Open Day events

National Science Day: Scientific institutions across the country are preparing to celebrate National Science Day later this week. In his latest radio address, Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged young students to experience ‘One Day as a Scientist’ by spending time in research laboratories, visiting planetaria, and exploring space and science centres.

The theme for National Science Day 2025 is ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat’.

In the national capital, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) will organise a day-long celebration on February 28. The event will feature the inauguration of Inclusive Technology Business Incubators, the launch of a new initiative to support electric vehicle startups, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Ayush to develop biomedical devices. The event will be attended by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister (I/C), DST, Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, along with secretaries from the Departments of Science and Technology, Biotechnology, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, among other leading scientists. Additionally, a national-level science quiz competition, Vigyanotsav, will take place.

Goa University

When: February 27, 10.30 am
Where: Biotechnology Seminar Hall, Block E, Goa University
Public Talk: Climate Change and Biodiversity: India’s Path to Resilience by Prof. Pramod Tandon

Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune

When: February 28, 10 am onwards
What: IUCAA will host its annual Open Day to celebrate National Science Day, featuring poster and model exhibitions showcasing major science projects. Visitors can enjoy live telescope sessions, aero-modelling demonstrations, and interactive sessions with science scholars and scientists.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune
When: February 28, 10.30 am onwards
What: Live experiment demonstrations, science model exhibitions, interactive sessions with scientists, a science quiz, lectures, and more.

Raman Research Institute, Bangalore
When: February 28, 10 am onwards
What: Science exhibitions, visits to the Raman Archival Gallery and museum.

Kodaikanal Solar Observatory

When: February 28, 9 am onwards
What: Visitors can tour the observatory, attend the finals of essay and quiz competitions, and enjoy a popular science talk.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

When: March 1, 9:00 am onwards
What: A special Kids’ Zone for younger students will be set up. All departments will be open to general visitors and science enthusiasts, offering popular lectures, experiments, demonstrations, poster and quiz contests, as well as insights into ongoing research and technological initiatives.

Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore
When March2, 9:30 am onwards
What Activities will include astronomy posters, videos, talks in Kannada and English by eminent scientists, solar spectra and images, dark room experiments, space exhibits, Q&A sessions with astronomers, and discussions on career opportunities in astronomy.
