According to a police officer, Ningaraju Bhajantri had availed a huge loan and he wanted to clear it. He had asked his father to divide the family property between him and his brothers. However, his father had reportedly objected to it and Ningaraju Bhajantri used to blame his wife for the refusal.

The police said the family was on its way to a temple on a two-wheeler. On the way, the bike ran out of fuel. Ningaraju Bhajantri asked his wife and kids to stand near the canal and went to buy petrol. But by the time he returned, Bhagyashree Bhajantri had thrown the four children into the canal and also jumped in it. A fisherman noticed Bhagyashree Bhajantri and rescued her. She was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The police said she was out of danger and a murder case would be registered against her.
