The Karnataka police said on Wednesday that they had initiated investigations and deployed personnel after evidence emerged of Maoist activity in forests in the districts of Kodagu and Hassan.

According to the police, Maoist leader Vikram Gowda was spotted in a village in Kodagu, which borders Kerala.

Kodagu SP K Ramarajan told the media that while purchasing groceries, the Maoists approached villagers seeking support for their “fight for the poor”.

“We will not be able to reveal anything but there were two women and they had guns and magazines,” he added.

According to a police officer, the Maoist group may have ventured into Karnataka’s forest a month ago and may have plans to recruit cadres from the villages there. Also, the Hassan district police have issued a high alert after Maoist activity was observed in the Sakleshpur region.

The Opposition BJP alleged that Maoists from elsewhere in the country had moved to Karnataka since Siddaramaiah became chief minister.

“As Congress is in rule, they believe that they can carry out terror activities safely. Pakistan Zindabad, bomb blast happened and now Naxals are waiting to roar,” the party’s state unit wrote on the X platform.
