Karnataka residents will now have to pay higher electricity bills as the sate Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has approved a hike in tariffs by 70 paisa per unit to bridge the revenue deficit. This marks the fourth time in two years that electricity prices have been increased in Karnataka.

According to a press statement released by KERC, after scrutinizing the applications of Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs), the commission has approved a total Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) of Rs 58,109.95 crore as against Rs 62,133.47 crore sought by the ESCOMs in their tariff applications. The new charges will be applicable from April 1, 2023.

In addition, KERC has reduced the energy charges for industries and commercial establishments to Rs 5 per unit from Rs 6, extending the scheme to Low Tension (LT) commercial installations with a sanctioned load of 50kw and above. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the Energy charges for EV charging stations have been reduced to Rs. 4.50 per unit from the existing rate of Rs. 5.00 per unit. The rebate for Micro and Small industries of 50 paisa per unit will continue for one more year.

Furthermore, KERC has issued a new directive to ESCOMs, asking them to link RR numbers of IP sets with Aadhaar numbers of consumers within six months. Failing to do so, the government will not release subsidy in respect unlinked RR numbers .
