Thoogudeepa's petition argues that the weapon is necessary for his and his family's safety owing to his status as an actor. (Express Photo) Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa has moved the Karnataka High Court against the recent suspension of his arms licence by the court.
The date for the hearing in this matter is yet to be scheduled. Thoogudeepa’s petition argues that the weapon is necessary for his and his family’s safety owing to his status as an actor, while his licence ought not be suspended merely on the grounds that he could potentially misuse it.
Thoogudeepa is one of the accused in the murder of his fan, Renukaswamy, a native of Chitradurga, whose body was found near a stormwater drain in Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. The actor who was arrested on June 11 was released on bail four months later.
Renukaswamy had allegedly been murdered after he had sent vulgar messages to Pavithra Gowda, a friend of Thoogudeepa. A 3991-page chargesheet has been submitted by the police with regard to this case, while proceedings for murder and destruction of evidence had been initiated at the Kamakshipalya police station.
Thoogudeepa and several other co-accused had obtained bailin the matter in December 2024.
Thoogudeepa had surrendered the firearm in question following a direction by the Bangalore Police earlier this month.
As reported by The Indian Express, the police had requested the the DCP (Administration) for cancelling the arms licence in the wake of Thoogudeepa obtaining bail.
At the time, a senior police officer confirmed that a notice was served, stating, “The notice pertains to the safe deposit of the weapon and the cancellation of his arms licence.” Concerns included possible use of the firearm in witness intimidation.
