The Karnataka government has decided to allow vehicular traffic inside Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park from 7 pm to 10 pm on the second and fourth Saturdays. The 197-acre park is usually closed to vehicles on these days and Sundays to protect its biodiversity.

However, after much deliberation by the Bengaluru traffic police department, the government convened a meeting involving Chief Secretary Shalini Rajaneesh, officials from the Cubbon Park Conservation Committee, the traffic department, Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad and Shantinagar MLA N A Haris over the issue on January 21.

M N Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said the opening of the park for traffic on all days would decongest traffic around the central business district and enhance accessibility for people travelling from the south to the north side of Bengaluru.

He also argued that traffic congestion caused by the closure on the second and fourth Saturdays is increasing pollution levels around Cubbon Park.

The government thus decided to allow traffic on these days during a period when the highest congestion is reported.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board will also set up air quality and noise pollution meters for regular checks to see if pollution levels drop. The traffic police department will study the congestion levels around Cubbon Park on these days.

Meanwhile, environmental groups and a section of residents have launched an online petition titled Cubbon Park Pradakshiney Haaki, demanding that the space remain traffic-free on Sundays and other holidays. The petition urges authorities to “leave our Cubbon Park alone”, emphasising that the park becomes a vibrant, safe, and accessible space for the public during these traffic-free days. The petitioners argue that allowing traffic inside the park on public holidays is unnecessary, especially since even the Karnataka High Court remains closed on such days.
