A man was allegedly murdered and two of his associates were assaulted by cow vigilantes, who accused them of transporting cattle illegally, in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district, 20 km away from Bengaluru, Friday night. The police have booked activist Puneeth Kerehalli and four others in the case.

The deceased has been identified as Idrees Pasha, a resident of the state’s Mandya district. The incident came to light when the police arrested the driver of the container, Syed Zaheer, for illegal cow transportation based on Kerehalli’s complaint.

Kerehalli and his gang had intercepted the vehicle which was carrying cattle on Friday night. According to a police source, they stopped the vehicle in front of the Sathanur police station and chased Pasha and Irfan, the loader. While some men chased Pasha, two of them assaulted Zaheer, who was standing near the container. However, a police constable intervened and took Zaheer and Kerehalli to the police station.

The police source added even though Pasha had shown documents that he had bought the cattle from a local market, Kerehalli and others allegedly assaulted him and also asked him to go to Pakistan. After being beaten up, Pasha fell unconscious and succumbed to his injuries.

Kerehalli, who did not know about Pasha’s condition, filed a complaint with the police against the three. Zaheer and his associates were then booked under sections of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Prevention Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Transportation of Animals Act, and Motor Vehicles Act.

After the police began their probe, they came to know that Pasha had died after being allegedly beaten up by Karehalli and others.

Zaheer also lodged a complaint against Kerehalli and his associates, after which the police registered a murder case against them.
