85% commission under Congress rule, says PM Modi in Karnataka
Karnataka will go to the polls in a single phase on May 10, and the results of the elections will be declared on May 13.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday targeted BJP’s rivals, labelling the Congress’s tenure in the state as the rule of “85% commission” and calling the Janata Dal (Secular) “Private Limited Party”. He also labelled the JD(S) the “B Team” of Congress. Modi made the remarks at rallies in Kolar and Channapatna, which is in Ramanagara district.
Taking on the Congress for levelling corruption allegations against the BJP-led state government — the Opposition party has dubbed the Basavaraj Bommai-led state administration the “40% commission” government — Modi said in Kolar that there was “85 per cent commission” when the Congress was in power. He attacked the party over its “guarantees” to voters.
“Congress identity is 85% commission. During Congress rule, its biggest leader and its PM used to proudly say that if they (Union government) sent Rs 1, only 15 paise reached people. Money meant for the poor used to be snatched by the Congress hand. Such a party can never ensure the development of the state. Under BJP rule, 100% of the money meant for the poor reaches them.”
The BJP, according to Modi, focused on the welfare of all people rather than appeasement. “Congress thrives only in corruption. That is why they cannot investigate corruption. Congress cannot make a scheme that does not have corruption,” he said.
Referring to the Gandhi family, Modi said the Congress’s “royal family” and its close associates were out on bail in cases related to irregularities worth thousands of crores. “Since top leaders of the party are involved in corruption, the Congress cannot be anti-corruption. Only the BJP can fight the menace,” he said, adding, “Their hate and attacks on me have increased.”
The Congress, he said, was comparing him to a snake and seeking votes. “The snake is a graceful animal coiled around the neck of Lord Shankar. For me, the people of the country are forms of Shiva. I accept being a snake coiled around their necks,” he added.
He accused the Opposition party of opening a “bundle of false guarantees”. “Congress has a track record of not fulfilling its guarantees… (In the past) Congress gave guarantees. Congress cheated,” he said, adding that it was the BJP which fulfilled the assurances made by the Congress in the past.
He cited the electrification of all villages and the direct income support scheme for farmers, as examples of schemes that the Congress promised but were fulfilled by the BJP. “Not fulfilling assurances made in the manifesto was a sin,” the PM said.
In Channapatna, the PM trained his guns on the JD(S) led by former PM H D Kumaraswamy. “The JD(S) exists only for a family. It is a party of family politics. In 2018, both Congress and JD(S) were up against each other. But after the results, they joined hands. Every vote cast for the JD(S) will go to the Congress. Development is never possible through the JD(S) and the Congress. This time, the voters of Karnataka have taken a decision. The Congress and the JD(S) would be taught a lesson. JD(S) is the Congress’s B-team.”
