Two major issues with the new 117-km Bengaluru Mysuru Expressway highway, which emerged within a week of its opening by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, are resolved, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said in a statement Tuesday.

The issues with regard to a flyover and drainage system on the 10-lane Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway have been resolved, while a third issue of free access to service roads for the convenience of people living in villages around the highway is being resolved, NHAI said.

“The rectification of the expansion joints of one of the major bridges-cum-ROB was part of the operation and maintenance of the Expressway that was taken up to remove the jerks and improve the riding quality on the bridge. The rectification work has been completed and it is now open for traffic,” the NHAI said in a statement on Tuesday.

“NHAI is also addressing the drainage issue near Sagabasavandoddi village. Unprecedented rainfall on 17th March 2023 caused inundation on the carriageway near the animal overpass at one point on the 117 km long expressway,” the authority said. The NHAI has blamed the local residents for the flooding on the expressway near the Sagabasavanadoddi village.

“The provision of drainage arrangement at this location was blocked by the villagers by dumping soil over the drain which resulted in stagnation of water on the main carriageway. To address this, the NHAI has laid a pipe drain with two rows of pipes to facilitate the easy flow of rainwater. The work is completed on 19th March 2023 and the traffic is flowing smoothly,” the NHAI said Tuesday.

The NHAI has said that it is making service roads for the highways to facilitate access for local people.

“Now, the NHAI has taken adequate measures for proper drainage on service roads, which includes the construction of RCC drains. Proper access to service roads would be ensured,” the authority stated.

“Roughly 55,000 passenger car units are moving on this road. The travel time has been reduced from four hours to 1.5 hours,” the NHAI claimed.
