Officials at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison have seized a mobile phone from a 25-year-old undertrial prisoner who had allegedly concealed it in his rectum using sellotape.

The incident took place on Tuesday, when the prisoner, Raghuveer, returned after a court hearing. After he complained of stomachache, prison officials got suspicious and inspected his body with a handheld metal detector, which went off near his body cavity.

A police officer said, “Raghuveer was immediately taken to the house clinic inside the prison and an X-ray showed an opaque foreign object on his body.”

The doctors found that Raghuveer had concealed an object—7 cm in length and 2 cm in breadth—wrapped with sellotape inside the body cavity. It was then revealed as a mobile phone.

A prison official said, “Though new technology jammers are installed inside the prison, there are some isolated places where they have mobile network coverage to communicate. Some prisoners attempt to smuggle in mobile phones when they go out to attend court hearings or get admitted to hospital. In Raghuveer’s case, he had returned after attending a court hearing.”

The police registered an FIR under section 42 (mobile or any instrument of communication with prisoners) of the Karnataka Prisons Act and section 323 (dishonest or fraudulent removal or concealment of property) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigations are underway.
