The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is sending text messages to more than six lakh property tax defaulters warning of legal action and property seizure if the dues are not cleared.
Special Commissioner (revenue) Munish Moudgil said the SMS was being sent to six lakh defaulters “who owe about Rs 500 crore to the BBMP”. “If they do not pay then action mentioned in the SMS will be initiated,” he added.
The text messages warn defaulters that they are “liable for action under the BBMP Act 2020, including sale of movable properties, attachment and sealing of immovable properties, entry of attachment in the encumbrance certificate issued by the sub-registrar, seizure and recovery from bank accounts and criminal cases”.
This is part of the ongoing drive to recover property tax dues and shore up revenues. In the 2023-24 budget, the BBMP has set a property tax collection target of Rs 4,600 crore, up from the Rs 3,332 crore collected in the 2022-23 fiscal.
In the third week of December 2023, the BBMP sealed a few commercial properties for which the tax had not been paid.
