The Bengaluru police on Thursday arrested three people for allegedly assaulting a professor after the latter confronted them for littering.
The victim, Aurobindo Gupta, is a professor at Dayananda Sagar College.
The alleged incident occurred near the JHBCS layout in South Bengaluru around 4 pm on Monday. The three arrested individuals have been identified as Bhanu Prasad, 26; Sharat, 23; and Amrut Kumar, 24. While Kumar is an autorickshaw driver, Sharat and Prasad are delivery agents.
According to police officials, the three were in a four-wheeler and one of them carelessly dumped a plastic glass containing some liquid, which accidentally fell on Gupta, who was riding a two-wheeler. The police stated that Gupta confronted them and questioned the men, citing the risk it posed to two-wheeler riders.
“The confrontation escalated and the men allegedly punched him and attacked him with a helmet,” a police official said.
Gupta sustained a mild concussion, a fracture under his eye, and a nose fracture. The accused have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita under section 115 (2) for voluntarily causing hurt.
The official also said: “There is no communal or language controversy in this incident as reported on social media. Such claims are baseless.”
Speaking to The Indian Express, Gupta said: “The boys were stinking drunk and they were not in their senses. Let alone me, they could have caused trouble to anyone on the road. When they threw the cup and it hit me, all I told them was not to do such things. This triggered them, and they retaliated… It was only with a good intention that I advised them, so that their lives are not destroyed by such negligent acts.”
The Malur resident added: “A young boy came up to me and helped me. Then other people came to the rescue and got me ice packs.”
