Two state railway police personnel were arrested along with another man in Bengaluru Tuesday for allegedly robbing gold biscuits worth Rs 1.21 crore from two men who had arrived in the city to buy the yellow metal. The police informed that the two personnel were deployed on security duty of Vande Bharat trains.
West division police Tuesday announced the arrest of the two personnel and identified them as Mounesh Tippanna (30), a resident of Raichur district and Siddappa Vittala (31), a resident of Vijayapura district. Both worked as railway police in Vijayapura. The third arrested, who worked at a jewellery shop, was identified as Mounesh Sitharam (28), a resident of Raichur district.
The incident took place on March 11 around 11 pm when two men, Abdul Razak and Mallaya, on the directions of their employer, bought 1.76 kg gold biscuits and were waiting near a private bus stand near the Anand Rao circle in Gandhinagar.
Two of the accused approached Razak and Mallaya in the guise of policemen and seized the bag of gold and made them board an auto-rickshaw along with them. The accused then dropped Mallaya near Congress office and Razak near Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. The accused also asked Razak and Mallya to come to the DC office and left.
Upon realising that they were looted, Razak and Mallaya informed their employer and subsequently, a police complaint was filed on March 12. The police scanned the CCTV footage and identified the accused.
The police first arrested Vittala and Thippanna and during interrogation, they revealed that Sitharam, who worked at a jewellery shop in Chickpet, was aware of people who frequently came to buy gold biscuits and had informed Thippanna about Razak and Mallaya’s purchase. The police later arrested Sitharam.
Investigations revealed that Thippanna and Vittala worked in Vijayapura but following recent incidents of miscreants pelting stones at Vande Bharat Express trains, the police increased patrolling along the tracks and posted the accused along with others for security of the trains.
