Union Home Minister Amit Shah. (File) Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the National Cancer Institute on Thursday during a two-day visit to Nagpur at a function that will also be attended by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, sources said.
A senior BJP functionary indicated that Maharashtra politics and national issues would feature in the leaders’ discussion. The cancer institute was scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had to defer his visit due to the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, the sources said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s office said that the CM who has been at his native Dare village in Satara district would also join Shah in Nagpur. As per the original programme, Shinde was to travel to Mumbai on Wednesday evening to attend an event of a media organisation.
Faced with criticism of holidaying for three days amid political uncertainity in the state and police action against the locals in Barsu-Solgaon in Ratnagiri district for opposing an upcoming oil refinery project, Shinde’s office released a statement saying he cleared 65 files after discussions with additional chief secretary over video-conferencing.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who was campaigning in Karnataka for two days also will be in Nagpur. He is scheduled to travel to Mauritius on April 28 where he will unveil the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Shah’s visit to Nagpur, where the RSS headquarters is located, comes 10 days after his Navi Mumbai visit on April 16 for the Maharashtra Bhushan Award event where 14 people lost their lives due to sun stroke.
This is Shah’s fourth visit to Maharashtra after the Shinde-Fadnavis government came to power.
