In a case of honour killing, a 19-year-old woman in Ahmedabad was allegedly murdered by her family members as they did not approve of her relationship with a man who belongs to the same community and village as theirs.

The Kanbha police booked five people including the woman’s father, uncles and cousins for not only killing her, but also for trying to dispose of her body by secretly burning it in their Bakrol village in Daskroi tehsil.

The five people booked for the murder of Mansi alias Heena Solanki are her father Arvindsinh Solanki, uncles Popatsinh and Natvarsinh, and cousins Gajendrasinh and Natvarsinh. All the accused except one of the cousins have been arrested, according to the police.

After they got a tip-off on the night of September 6 that a body of an unknown person had been cremated in Bakrol, the police recovered half-burnt remains of a woman from the village crematorium.

The police discovered Mansi was in a relationship with a man from her village and community. She had allegedly eloped twice in the past, because of which her family had shifted to Ahmedabad city, hoping to avoid “humiliation in the community”. Mansi’s family tried to persuade her to end the relationship, which they thought was not in consonance with their social norms. However, the woman insisted she will marry him.

According to the police, Mansi’s family members thus hatched a conspiracy to kill her. They set off on a religious trip and allegedly strangled her on the Vadodara-Halol highway near the Narmada canal. In an attempt to destroy evidence, they allegedly burnt her body in the village crematorium with wood and diesel.

The police are the complainant in the case registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 103 (1) (murder), 61(2)(a) (criminal conspiracy), and 238(a) (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender), among others.
