A 50-year-old woman allegedly bit and beat her 14-month-old grandson, causing his death, after she purportedly failed to pacify him, police said. The grandmother, based in Rajasthali village of Amreli district, has been arrested after a case of murder was registered against her Wednesday.
The incident happened between 4.30 pm and 5 pm Tuesday when the boy started crying wildly while playing with his sister in their grandmother Kulsan Saiyad’s room, said Amreli Superintendent of Police (SP) Himkar Singh. “Kulsan tried to pacify the child but to no avail. Therefore, in a fit of rage, Kulsan bit him on the cheek, forehead, hands, and feet, and also slapped him on the face and legs, leading to his death,” Singh said.
Initially, a case of accidental death was registered at Amreli Rural police station at 1.15 am Wednesday based on information provided by Hussain Saiyad, the grandfather of the child. However, while conducting an inquiry, Labhubhai Sodhatar, a
police sub-inspector (PSI) attached to the Amreli Rural police station, reportedly discovered otherwise.
Therefore, the PSI filed a complaint, alleging the murder of the 14-month-old child.
The PSI said that the body had bite marks and other injury marks, and was hence sent for post-mortem by a panel of doctors. During questioning, family members of the victim told police that Kulsan had bitten and beaten up her grandson.
“We have booked Kulsan Saiyad for murder and formally arrested her at 6 pm on Wednesday. We shall produce her in court later on Thursday,” MJ Barot, police inspector incharge of Amreli Rural police station, told The Indian Express.
