Victims cremated,relatives to hold condolence meetings today

The five persons of Gujarati origin,who were killed in terrorist attack in Nairobi’s Westgate mall,were cremated on Tuesday.

The five persons of Gujarati origin,who were killed in terrorist attack in Nairobi’s Westgate mall,were cremated on Tuesday. The family members of the victims will hold condolence meetings on Thursday.

Two women of Rajkot’s Vaya family and teenaged girls with their roots in Jamnagar and Kutch respectively were killed in the attack. The women have been identified as Jyoti Vaya (35) and Malti Vaya (33) while the girls have been identified as Neha Mashru (15) of Jamnagar and Nehal Vekaria (17) of Kutch.

“Our family members and relatives conducted the funeral of Jyoti and Malti at 2 pm,” Hemant Vaya,a city-based jeweller said on Wednesday. Hemant is the younger brother of Mathur Vaya and the victims were wives of Mathur’s sons Dharmesh and Ramesh,respectively.

While Dharmesh is a bank manager in Kenya,Ramesh runs a provision store. Malti worked for a bank. The family had migrated to Kenya some 30 years ago.

“Though neither of us could attend the last rites,we are holding a condolence meeting in Rajkot on Thursday,” Hemant said.

Similarly,last rites of Neha were performed on Tuesday,his Jamnagar-based uncle Bhavesh Mashru said.

“My parents,Naranbhai and Saralaba,reached Nairobi on Monday to be with my brothers and sisters-in-law. They attended Neha’s funeral on Tuesday,” Bhavesh said,adding that he was holding a condolence meeting in Jamnagar on Thursday.

Neha,eldest daughter of Manish,was in the mall with her parents and aunt Hetal when the terrorist struck. While she was killed in the indiscriminate firing,her mother Richa sustained bullet wounds on her lips. Manish and Hetal escaped unhurt,Bhavesh said. Manish had immigrated to Kenya in 1994 with his four brothers and their families.

Jamnagar native died saving kids

AHMEDABAD: Several children lost their lives in the terror attack at Westgate mall in Nairobi during a cooking competition. Mitul Shah,sales and marketing director of Bidco Oil Refineries,one of the sponsors of the event,died trying saving children during the attack.

Bidco Oil Refineries’ official page on a social networking site pays tribute to Shah,originally from Jamnagar and a football fan who also headed the company’s football team.

Shah,who was at the event to promote the company’s cooking oils,fell to bullets while trying to shield children participating in the competition.
