The communally sensitive area of Tandalja in Vadodara will celebrate Raksha Bandhan festival in a unique way this year. Girls from Muslim and Hindu dominated localities of Tandalja area will come together on Wednesday to tie rakhis on the hands of boys from the opposite communities. More than 50 girls and boys will celebrate the festival creating an atmosphere of communal harmony in the area.
Sprat-Society for Promoting Rationality,an NGO,has taken this initiative for the first time in Vadodara to bring people together from different communities. The programme will be organised jointly by the SPRAT and the Lions club Vadodara.
Lina Rao,one of the senior members of the NGO,said,”This will be the first time we will celebrate such festival in Vadodara. Later,we will also dedicate our Caravan centre to Vadodara.”
On August 9,SPRAT founder- chairman Lord Bhikhu Parekh will inaugurate the sixth centre called Caravan in Tandalja area. I will deliver keynote address at the inaugural ceremony of the centre, said Lord Parekh.
Other dignitaries who will be present at the occasion include Hasmukh Shah,former chairman of NID and Dr YK Alagh,former Union Minister.
The centre,said the NGO sources,will make efforts to empower women and children. It will teach students preparing for their SSC,HSC,Civil Services and various other competitive exams. The sources said the centre will be equipped with video theatre,vocational library,empowerment workshops,information kiosks and will support the NGOs other initiatives. The centre will also provide micro credits and loans to women to help them start their own businesses. The Vadodara centre will be the sixth centre of the NGO in the state.
