The matter came to the fore after the workers from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s sanitation department received a call from the area residents regarding a choked drain. A team from the VMC reached the spot and on checking found the body of a newborn blocking the drainage chamber.
Later, the local residents also informed the Kapurai police station. The police have registered a case against unidentified persons and have launched a search to track down the parents of the newborn.
Even though the VMC officials called the 108 ambulance service, the newborn was declared dead.
The body was later handed over to Kapurai police station and sent for post-mortem examination, said police.
An official from the Kapurai police station, on the condition of anonymity, said that the drainage chamber is located in a thickly populated area near a gas cylinder godown and tracking down the accused could be “difficult”.
The official added, “We have started scanning the CCTV footage from around the drainage chamber to see if we can trace someone coming into the area with a newborn child. We are hopeful we will track down the culprits at the earliest.”
