To plug loopholes in the public distribution system, the Vadodara district administration has decided to install Global Positioning System (GPS) in the tankers supplying kerosene. This will be part of the exercise to ensure that the fair price items are delivered to the end users without any hassle. District Collector Vijay Nehra said: We had been studying the system minutely for over a year. We found there were loopholes, which invited complaints from the end users. So we decided to introduce a system to check the irregularities. As per the new system, which will have a multi-pronged approach,a vigilance committee will be set up and fair price shopowners will be put under the scanner, besides installation of GPS. From next month, the first day of every month will be known as Antyoday Divas. A meeting of all fair price shop owners of a taluka will be held on this day, during which the district administration officials will check their records, Nehra said. The vigilance committee,he said, will comprise of local Panchayati Raj members, womens body members, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and elected functionaries among others. FPS owners have been instructed not to distribute items before the stock is inspected by district officials. We were quite concerned about the delivery of the goods. And to improve that,we have introduced the delivery monitoring system, Nehra added.
