The BJP on Thursday alleged that former Gujarat DGP R B Sreekumar’s (RBS) tirade against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over the last few years has been part of a political “quid pro quo” by the retired police officer in lieu of a clean chit granted to him by the Congress-led UPA government in connection with the ISRO spy case allegedly “fabricated” by the officer against “a brilliant rocket scientist”.

“In 1999,Government of India initiated disciplinary proceedings against the IPS officer (Sreekumar) and was served a chargesheet that includes physically taking over possession of the accused persons (in ISRO espionage case) from the lawful custody of Kerala Police without completing legal formalities and conducted independent investigation disassociating the Kerala Police,” BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi reminded, pointing out,“However, things changed dramatically in the second half of 2004 when the UPA Government came to power… Sreekumar was given a clean chit. On 13th December,2004,MHA issued an order dropping 7 out of the 9 charges without even conducting any enquiry whatsoever”.

The scientist,Nambi Narayanan, was later cleared in the espionage case.

The BJP spokesperson asserted that Sreekumar’s tirade against Modi,in concert with social activist Teesta Setalvad, was “part of the deal” with the Congress government at the Centre. “As a part of the quid pro quo,RBS was expected to launch a tirade full of lies and untruths against the BJP Government in Gujarat for political reasons. Apparently,Sreekumar honoured his part of the deal with his political suitors and continues to do the same even today,” Lekhi alleged.

Addressing a press conference,Lekhi played the CD of an alleged telephone conversation between Rais Khan,a former associate of social activist Teesta Setalvad, and Sreekumar to claim Sreekumar was working in tandem with Setalvad against the Modi-led Gujarat government.

“Interestingly,R B Sreekumar,in conversation with Rais Khan,ex-aide of Teesta Setalvad,on 4.11.2010 admitted that ‘Teesta helped me when chargesheet was given to me’,” Lekhi pointed out quoting from the CD.

‘BJP kept CBI report in cold storage’

Ahmedabad: Reacting to allegations,R B Sreekumar said the BJP had kept the CBI report against the IB officers, including him,in cold storage for five years before the UPA finally cleared the charges. He said,“In fact,a CBI report criticising the role of IB officers along with Kerala police officers,in this case, was kept in cold storage by the Vajpayee government for five years, from 1999-2004. The UPA government then conducted a departmental inquiry…”

He said,“IB officers don’t have any authority under CrPC to register cases, investigate and prosecute,so how could I have wrongly fixed Nambi Narayanan in a false case?”
