Unseasonal showers lash Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, Kutiyana receives maximum rain

According to IMD, light thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind accompanied by light rain are expected to continue in Gujarat till May 12.

Gujarat, the Saurashtra region in particular, reported heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the last 24 hours ending 6 am on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The adverse weather conditions have affected the mango cultivation in the areas, resulting in heavy losses to farmers.

Kutiyana taluka in Porbandar was inundated with 96 mm rainfall, followed by Jamkandorna in Rajkot, which received 79 mm rainfall in one day till Sunday morning.

At least 14 people, including four women, have lost their lives in the unseasonal rainfall that battered Gujarat in the past few days.

As per the weather department’s forecast, light thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind accompanied by light rain are expected to continue till May 12.

Other talukas that reported heavy rainfall, included Dhoraji (70 mm) in Rajkot, Manavadar (59 mm) in Junagadh, Idar in Sabarkantha and Jetpur in Rajkot (57 mm) each, Upleta in Rajkot (44 mm), Dhrol in Jamnagar (40 mm), Savarkundla in Amreli (30 mm), Talala in Gir Somnath (25 mm), Bhushan in Junagadh (24 mm), Bhanvad in Devbhoomi Dwarka (23 mm), Dhari in Amreli (21 mm), and Lakavad in Jamnagar (20 mm).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind blowing at a speed of 30-40 kmph accompanied by light rainfall on Sunday in the districts of Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Dahod, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Surendranagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, Amreli, Botad, Morbi, Junagadh, and Gir Somnath.

The unseasonal rainfall, as per the weather department, is due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra and Kutch, over Saurashtra and its neighbourhood along with a trough from east central Arabian Sea to northwest Madhya Pradesh across north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra.
