Two people were killed and at least 10 others injured after a mini-bus in which they were travelling fell into a river near a village in Amreli district of Gujarat which has been battered by heavy rains since Friday.
“The incident happened on Saturday when a culvert on the Bhavnagar-Rajkot road broke into two and a mini-bus passing on it fell into the water body. One lady passenger died on the spot, while a minor girl died later. About 10 others were injured the incident,” said HR Suthar, collector, Amreli. The incident happened near Lunki village in Babra taluka of the district.

The injured were rushed to the Amreli district hospital. The occupants of the bus were travelling from Rajkot to Amreli, which has received 33 percent more rainfall this monsoon. On Saturday, Amreli received 41 mm rainfall. In spite of the recent spell of rains that began Friday, Gujarat currently faces a rainfall deficit of 18%(as on Saturday).
Meanwhile, according to the IMD forecast for Sunday, the depression has now turned in to a “low pressure area over South Gujarat region”.
While rain or thundershowers are forecast for Ahmedabad, heavy to very heavy rains are expected at few places over Gujarat, including Saurashtra and Kutch regions. Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Saturday, Mahuva received the highest rainfall (89 mm), followed by Surat (75 mm), Amreli (41 mm) and Valsad (38mm).
In Surat city, people found it difficult to reach their offices and business establishments as several areas remained submerged on Saturday. According to the district flood control officials, different talukas of Surat — including Choryasi (68 mm), Kamrej (35 mm), Mahuva (44 mm), Mandvi (35 mm), Mangrol (56 mm), Olpad (25 mm), Plasana (62 mm) and Umarpada (50 mm) — recorded sizeable rainfall (morning to evening).
The rainfall in the upper catchment areas in 21 gauge stations in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra has reduced, as a result of which the inflow into Ukai dam on Tapi river, went down from four lakh cusecs on Friday night to 16,000 cusecs on Saturday.
The water level of Ukai dam on Saturday evening had touched 336 feet. The danger level of the dam is 345 feet.
