Surat police has picked up a 26-year-old suspect from Bikaner in Rajasthan for his alleged links to an accused arrested in Surat for threatening Hindu Sanatan Sangh leaders.

The detainee, Ashok Suthar alias Abu Bakr, was picked up from a house in the New City Area of Bikaner from where he is being brought to Gujarat for further questioning.

Suthar was picked up after cops traced a Rajasthan-based phone number that Mohammed Sohel Timol alias Maulvi, who was arrested from Surat, was regularly in touch with. Bikaner Superintendent of Police Tejashvi Gautam also formed a joint interrogation committee comprising both Gujarat and Rajasthan police officials to question Suthar. The cops have seized his mobile phone which is being examined.

According to Gautam, Suthar, who works in a computer hardware shop in Bikaner, converted to Islam two years ago in Delhi. However, he had concealed it even from his own wife.

“Several incriminating details have been found from his phone, including phone numbers from Pakistan. He was in contact with these numbers. After primary questioning, we have found that he has no criminal records. We handed him over to Gujarat (Surat) police Tuesday afternoon and they are on their way to Surat. Currently, it is difficult to say about his involvement, but Surat police are carrying out detailed investigations,” Gautam told The Indian Express.

“Suthar was in contact with Mohammed Sohel. Currently, it is difficult to know about Suthar’s involvement. We are trying to get more information from him after he is brought to Surat,” a Surat crime branch official, on condition of anonymity, said.
