Luck ran out for two impostors on Tuesday when the police caught them red-handed when they tried to steal a cellphone from a person on the pretext of frisking.

Kalaji Thakore from Gandhinagar and Mohd Hanif alias Babu Sheikh were ‘patrolling’ near the Gaekwad Haveli on a motorcycle and tried to threaten one Gulamhussain Sheikh,a resident of Behrampura. They reportedly snatched his mobile too.

When Gulam raised an alarm, policemen on patrol duty nearby rushed to the spot. Thakore and Hanif were caught near the AMC office. The police said the two deceived people by carrying a stick and coerce the people to give up their phones and cash.

Sub-Inspector Sonaji Chauhan said: “The two accused must have stolen a police stick from somewhere. They would attach it to their motorcycle like the policemen and roam the Walled City area, stealing mobile phones on the pretext of frisking.”
