A team of officials from the Central Water & Power Research Station (CWPRS),Pune along with National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has begun a survey to finalise the location for the new bridge on Narmada river connecting Bharuch and Ankleshwar.
It is important to have the opinion of the CWPRS as several aspects like flow of water, depth of the foundation, etc are important to study before the construction begins, said a senior NHAI official.
The team of the officials from CWPRS included M N Singh,Chief Research Officer and Arun Kumar, research officer. There were other officials from NHAI as well who visited different spots to finalise the location where the bridge would be constructed, said a senior official.
The NH-8 in this area passes through two separate 2-lane bridges over Narmada river. The first bridge known as Golden Bridge was constructed in 1970s and the second bridge was constructed in 2000. Only light vehicles are permitted on the Golden Bridge.
The permission for construction of new bridge has already been granted by the Central government. The bridges construction is expected to complete within three years, said a senior NHAI official requesting anonymity.
The CWPRS members would be submitting their findings to NHAI and accordingly the further execution will take place. The new bridge will have a conventional look but it will have ample space for vehicular traffic. Instead of making it two-lane,we have decided to have three lanes to reduce the chances of traffic jam, said the NHAI official.
