Surtis get a high-flying experience ahead of Uttarayan

Over 30 participants from 12 countries mesmerised Suratis with their kite-flying skills and giant kites during a day-long event organised at Jyotindra Dave Garden here on Monday.

Over 30 participants from 12 countries mesmerised Suratis with their kite-flying skills and giant kites during a day-long event organised at Jyotindra Dave Garden here on Monday. The event was organised by the state Tourism Department in association with the Surat Municipal Corporation.

Officials said that besides locals,the event saw participation of kite fliers from the US,Germany,Singapore,Malaysia,New Zealand,Holland,France,Austria,Cambodia,Mozambique,South Africa and Thailand.

Mayor Raju Desai said,“It was a memorable experience. Foreigners brought kites of different types and everybody enjoyed a lot. I even got a chance to fly a huge kite under guidance of foreigners. Many people used the event as platform to display different types of kites.”

Jackie Mountjoy,a participant from South Africa,said,“It’s good to participate in the international kite flying festival. We like Indian culture and people’s behaviour towards us. I have been participating in kite flying events in different countries for 25 years. This is my third visit to Gujarat.”

Besides the mayor,the inaugural function was attended by municipal commissioner M K Das,BJP MP Darshana Jardosh and BJP MLAs among others.
