Both BJP and Congress candidates filed their nominations for the upcoming by-election of Surat-West Assembly seat,at deputy collector’s office in Nanpura on Friday afternoon. City BJP president Purnesh Modi will contest against Congress leader D L Patel,a retired sales tax officer. The election for the seat will be held on December 4 and counting will begin on December 8. The Assembly seat has been vacant after the death of two-time BJP MLA Kishor Vankawala.

On Friday afternoon,BJP and Congress supporters reached the Deputy collector office at Nanpura separately with music bands. BJP MPs C R Patil and Darshana Jardosh, along with MLAs and municipal corporators, also joined. After filling the form,BJP leaders and workers burst fire crackers.

In the last Assembly elections,Congress candidate Usha Patel lost against BJP candidate late Kishor Vankawala by 75,000 votes. This year, the BJP workers have the target to win the election with the margin of one lakh votes.

Patel,a resident of Adajan area in Surat, retired in 2006 as sales tax officer. His native place is Olpad in Surat district. He said,“This is for the first time I am contesting election and the responsibility given to me by my party bosses is tough but we all will work hard and emerge victorious. I will take up mostly local issues. The BJP MLA has no power to take this issue to the state government and come out with proper solution. I will take this issue and will see that proper embankment wall is made on the banks of Tapi river from the starting point of the city to the end point so that the people will not fear floods.”
