A 71-year-old man, who was dismissed from his post of surveyor in Bharuch’s District Land Revenue office, attempted suicide by setting him ablaze in the Navsari district collector office premises on Friday evening.
Bharatbhai Bhavsar, a resident of Vijalpore, was rushed to the civil hospital in Navsari town by staffers from the collector’s office.
The Navsari rural police said the condition of Bhavsar, who has incurred around 35 per cent burn injuries, is stable.
The police added that Bhavsar was suspended from his job over his alleged involvement in making changes in government land records in 2001. One year later, he was dismissed.
“He filed a plea with the settlement commissioner in Gandhinagar, which was denied. In 2022, Bhavsar moved the Gujarat High Court, where the matter is still pending,” said a police officer.
“After Bhavsar arrived at the campus of the Navsari district collector’s office, he took out some inflammable material from a bottle and poured it over his body and set himself on fire. The peons and other staffers managed to douse the flames and took him to the civil hospital,” the officer added.
Navsari rural police Inspector D K Patel said, “We have made an entry in the police station diary. Bhavsar was depressed after his dismissal from service. In his statement, he has said that he attempted suicide at the collector’s office as he thought this way his issues would be heard.”
