Areas near Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad on alert due to release of water into Sabarmati Riverfront

The Ahmedabad irrigation department issued an alert Monday afternoon for areas around the Sabarmati River near Subhash Bridge due to water release from the Dharoi Dam and Vasna Barrage downstream.

The walkway, or lower promenade, of the Sabarmati Riverfront remains closed to the public following heavy rain Sunday. After the release of water into the river, many snakes were seen floating in the Riverfront, and local agencies rescued some.

Also, the villages likely to be flooded along the Sabarmati River have been put on alert, and authorities have been asked to take appropriate safety measures.

According to the information received from Dharoi Dam authorities located on the Sabarmati River, the level of Dharoi Dam is 188.68 metres at 12 noon Monday.

“As the water level in Dharoi Dam is 88.52 per cent, from the next hour, 107248 cusecs of water is being released from Dharoi Dam into the lower areas of Sabarmati River, which may increase gradually. The amount of water currently being released from Dharoi Dam is likely to reach Subhash Bridge after around 10 to 12 hours. Considering this, a White Signal (Alert) has been issued from Subhash Bridge,” the alert from the irrigation department stated.

Also, according to the information received from the Sant Sarovar dam located on the Sabarmati River, a quantity of 27,282 cusecs of water is currently being released into the Sabarmati River downstream of the dam.

Currently, 30,836 cusecs of water is being released into the Sabarmati River from the Vasna Barrage, and this flow will increase gradually. As many as 25 gates of the Barrage have been opened up to 6 feet.

In light of the substantial increase in water inflow from Dharoi Dam and Vasana Barrage into the Sabarmati River, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has notified all contractors and agencies involved in ongoing projects. This includes the second phase of the Riverfront Development, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited’s bullet train project, as well as agencies managing the Riverfront’s boating and floating restaurants, along with security and police administration.

Meanwhile, fishers have been advised not to venture out to sea until August 28 due to weather warnings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in several areas of Saurashtra and Kutch, as well as other districts in Gujarat, Tuesday. Also, Central and South Gujarat are expected to experience heavy rain. As a precaution, fishers are urged to stay out of the sea until the warning period is over.

Gujarat records 84 per cent of seasonal average rainfall

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre in Gandhinagar, as on Monday, the total average rainfall of the season in the state is more than 84 per cent. During the last 24 hours, Sankheda taluka of Chhota Udepur district has recorded the highest rainfall of 4 inches in the state.

Apart from this, 3.90 inches of rainfall have been recorded in Umarpada taluka of Surat district, 3.86 inches in Idar of Sabarkantha, 3.54 inches in Vyara of Tapi, and 3.15 inches in Dabhoi of Vadodara.

Apart from this, in just four hours from 6 am to 10 am Monday, 2.13 inches of rainfall was recorded in Balasinor taluka of Mahisagar and Vijaynagar taluka of Sabarkantha.

Currently, the Sardar Sarovar Dam is more than 84 per cent full. There are 67 dams in the state that are over 100 per cent full, while 27 dams are between 90 per cent and 100 per cent full. Overall, 94 dams are on high alert, and 19 dams are under warning.

As of August 25, the state has recorded over 84 per cent of the total seasonal average rainfall. The highest rainfall has been observed in the North Gujarat zone, at 87.43 per cent, followed by South Gujarat at 86.41 per cent, Kutch region at 85.08 per cent, Saurashtra zone at 83.51 per cent, and the East Central zone with the lowest at 79.08 per cent.
