There is nothing new about racial attacks against Indians in Australia; only, these were never highlighted, says the president of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA). Since its formation in 2001,FISA has come across several instances of racial abuse against Indian students. Indians have always been targeted, but things have gone unreported due to non-action by the Australian government. It was different this time because the media showed a greater sensitivity. But the Australian government must think why Indian students have so far kept mum over the issue, FISA president Amit Meghnani told The Indian Express here on Tuesday. He said the several thousand Indian students in Australia want the Indian Government to keep up the pressure on its Australian counterpart. The students, who largely appreciate the steps taken so far by the Australian Government, however, continue to live under a sense of fear,he pointed out. Media reports followed by the strong stand taken by the Indian Government have really helped us raise our voice after remaining suppressed for long. We want the Indian Government to keep up the pressure and have the two governments work together to end this issue, he said. The large protest rally held by Indian students in Melbourne on Monday was organised by FISA. Meghnani, who has been studying in Melbourne for four years now, says there has been some improvement in the situation of late. Things are now slowly getting back to normal, but the 90,000 Indian students, majority of whom also work part time, continue to live with a palpable sense of fear. Some students have already packed their bags to return home. The attacks have tremendously affected the lives of the Indian students there, he added. According to the FISA president,Indian students, who have emerged strong competitors for locals for part time jobs, have been targeted and particularly those returning home late night. Indian students work hard and are skilled. So,they have a sizeable presence in hospitality, beauty care, restaurants, petrol pumps and other industries. FISA has also petitioned that the Victorian police have a multicultural team to enhance security cover at train stations. After the attacks hit headlines,Meghnani said the Victorian state authorities have asked all residents to join in a peace walk on June 12. Indian students have welcomed the step,he said. This is a wonderful gesture by the Australian Government. In an attempt to build a sense of confidence, the government has invited every one to be a part of the walk, he added.
