State govt allocates Rs 171 crore for infrastructure in RO RO project

The state government has allocated Rs 171 crore to set up terminals and other infrastructure facilities under its ambitious project of Roll-On Roll-Off ferry services to be introduced between Ghogha in Bhavnagar and Dahej in Bharuch.

The state government has allocated Rs 171 crore to set up terminals and other infrastructure facilities under its ambitious project of Roll-On Roll-Off (RO RO) ferry services to be introduced between Ghogha in Bhavnagar and Dahej in Bharuch.

The announcement was made by state Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas in the House on Friday while replying to a debate on the budgetary demands of the Ports Department. The RO-RO ferry services, once completed, will help reduce the travelling distance between Saurashtra and South Gujarat considerably,he said.

Vyas told the House that the government proposed to develop a ship building park at Dahej and Bhavanagar, and also create a cluster along the state’s coast with all infrastructure facilities to develop 12 to 15 ship building parks there. The government expects private investment to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore in the ship building sector.

The minister said the government has evolved a policy to attract more private investment in the port sector, and efforts have been initiated to develop as many as six ports — Hazira,Maroli,Dholera,Vansi-Borsi,Simar and Mithi Virdi — in private sector, and another four ports – Mundra,Dahej,Bedi and Positra – in joint sector.

“The government has succeeded in attracting private investment of Rs 20,600 crore in the port sector till now. In 2008-09,about 153 million metric tones of cargo movement has been reported from the state’s ports (which is 20 per cent of the country’s total cargo traffic recorded in that year),and the government has set the target at 170 million MTs for 2009-10,” Vyas told the House.
