(File photo)A Mumbai-bound SpiceJet aircraft, operating flight SG 2906, lost one of its landing gears while taking off from Kandla airport in Gujarat on Friday but continued its journey and landed safely at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
The aircraft, a Bombardier DHC8400, also known as Dash 8-Q400, departed from Kandla airport at 2.39 pm. As per officials, the tower controller saw a big black piece detach from the plane as it took off from runway 23.
The piece dropped on the right side of the runway and rolled for some distance, officials said. An airport vehicle was sent for inspection and officials saw a landing gear and metal rings. The DHC8400 has a tricycle landing gear system, comprising two nosegear wheels and four main landing gear wheels, two on each side.
At Mumbai airport, a full emergency was declared at 3.51 pm as a precaution for the arriving flight. According to CSMIA, normal operations resumed shortly after.
