Despite a “gracious” special case of providing nine grace marks, the Class X result of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), declared on Thursday, recorded a pass percentage of 64.62 per cent. In 2022, when the GSHSEB had awarded only five grace marks, the pass percentage was recorded at 65.18.

Sources said that in addition to granting five grace marks — the maximum that GSHSEB can grant — the Board also awarded another four marks to the students after receiving due approval from the state government.

Of the total 100 marks, students appeared for a 80-mark paper, along with internal assessment of 20 marks conducted by the respective schools. The overall pass mark is 33. While a student can clear the internal assessment by getting 7 marks, one has to get 26 to clear the 80-mark paper.

“Hardly any school fails a student in internal evaluation, where on an average, a student is awarded 12 to 20 marks. The students were awarded nine grace marks against last year’s five in the 80-mark external paper conducted by the Board,” an official from GSHSEB said.

Though there was not a drastic difference in the overall pass percentage, students who secured the highest grades declined considerably this year. For instance, the highest A1 grade halved from the 12,090 last year to 6,111 this year. The A2 grade, too, saw the figure declining from 52,992 last year to 44,480. While students getting B1 grade decreased from 93,602 to 86,611, for B2, the number dipped from 1,30,097 to 1,27,652.

Among the 7,34,898 regular students, 4,74,893 cleared the Class X examinations held in March. Also, the number of students who failed in two subjects increased by 15,165 since 2022.

Moreover, once again girls outshone boys with a pass percentage of 70.62 against 59.58. The number of schools with 100 per cent result declined from 294 last year to 272 while at the same time, schools where no student managed to clear the exam increased from 121 to 157.
