A seven-member committee formed by the Gujarat government to assess its plan to adopt Artificial Intelligence tools at the school level held a meeting earlier this week.

The panel discussed how government school teachers can use AI for their daily needs – how the technology can help teachers make daily plans, prepare question banks and evaluate students continuously based on research and analysis.

The meeting chaired by the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training director was held on the GCERT premises.

An AI expert from Ahmedabad Ankit Thakor, and the remaining six members including senior GCERT officials and head teacher of a government primary and secondary school from Anand and Amreli, respectively, attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the concerns majorly revolved around how to develop a technology for students and teachers using AI and train them.

Considering the needs of the state and teachers, the Gujarat education department is planning to use AI in educational and non-educational activities at the school level. It will be implemented in all government primary (around 32,000) and secondary schools (around 10,000) simultaneously.

“An online AI-orientation programme is being planned to be organised for the teachers at the state level by an expert team. In this online programme, information will be given on the understanding of AI and the use of existing educational tools,” Ankit Thakor, the technology expert and one of the committee members, told The Indian Express.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Education Minister Kuber Dindor said AI can play a major role in the effective and comprehensive implementation of the NEP and achieving its objectives.

“With the increasing use of AI in the world, teachers and students should be aware about the technology and how it can be used in education and how it can be brought to the classrooms. We are planning to make the state a leader in AI implementation,” Dindor said.

“Under the National Education Policy-2020, on the use and integration of technology with other core education sectors, it clearly mentions the potential of AI to bring about transformation in the education sector. AI can play a major role in the effective and comprehensive implementation of the NEP and achieving its objectives. Different AI tools can help in lesson planning and teaching, presentations, tests and generation of charts, posters and videos,” Thakor added.
