SC refuses to pass order on godman plea

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refrained from passing any order on a plea by self-styled godman Asaram.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refrained from passing any order on a plea by self-styled godman Asaram, who sought a restraint order against media from prejudicing his sexual assault case and demeaning his ashrams.

The matter was mentioned before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam which asked Asaram to file a proper petition and posted it for hearing on October 21.

Asaram’s counsel had urged the court to restrain media from carrying speculative reports about Asaram, his family and ashrams in the wake of rape allegations against him.

He objected to Asaram’s ashrams allegedly being portrayed by media “as some kind of brothels”.
