A lamp made from coffee grounds composite, a purse made from kombucha leather instead of animal leather, a toaster-typewriter that sears letters into bread — these are some of the works displayed during the sixth edition of ‘Raw Collaborative 2024’, a four-day design exhibition inaugurated at Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre, in Gandhinagar Thursday.

A participant at the exhibition and fourth-year student at the Faculty of Design at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, Janhavi Aggarwal, for her creation, explored the aesthetic beauty of kombucha leather in a lamp. Another participant and Aggarwal’s classmate, Aarjav Grover, while sharing about his self-standing lamp, made from coffee grounds composite, said: “By employing the coffee grounds composite for everyday products, I have transformed the often overlooked waste into a product that enhances and enriches interior spaces.”

One of the three founders of Raw Collaborative, Vishwa Bhatt, said: “The sixth edition of Raw Collaborative is different because this time the scale is larger and for the first time, a platform — the Raw Foundry — has been launched for the students.”

“Our partnership with Orange Tree was formed as our thoughts match when it comes to regenerative design,” Bhatt added.

During the exhibition, creative works of 10 budding designers will be presented. “The Raw Foundry is a platform for the students, to give them an opportunity to showcase their talent,” Raw Collaborative founder Tanvi Karia said.

“In a world with limited resources where regenerative designs are the need of the hour, we aim to encourage and hopefully develop the mindset where nothing is wasted but reused and recycled,” Orange Tree founder Gaurav Jain said.
