Two persons, who were part of a Tazia procession, died of electrocution in Dhoraji town of Rajkot district while 19 sustained injuries when the Tazia reportedly came in contact with a live 22 KV overhead electric cable.
The incident happened in Rasulpura on Saturday, marking Muharram. The deceased were identified as Junaid Majothi (22) and Sajid Sama (20).
Speaking to mediapersons, Rajkot district Superintendent of Police Jaipal Singh Rathore said, “Twenty-one people sustained injuries, among whom two, who were part of the procession, died. The rest of the injured are in hospital and their condition is said to be stable”. He advised the public “to be careful of such overhead cables and to inform the authorities in the case of such incidents”.
Rathore added that adequate number of police personnel had been deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Tazia procession is taken out on the occasion of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammed. Tazia is a miniature replica of the tomb of the Imam.
