Rains wash off apprehensions of alternative crop cultivation

The heavy downpour that has been lashing Saurashtra since last week has washed off the possibilities of change in the crop pattern in the region. Over 90 per cent of the major centres of groundnut and cotton farming have completed sowing.

According to the Agriculture department,till Sunday,sowing was done on over 37.17 lakh hectors of land. It covers nearly 90 per cent of the total cultivation area in eight districts of Saurashtra-Kutch— Rajkot,Jamnagar,Junagadh,Porbandar,Surendranagar,Bhavnagar,Amreli and Kutch.

Earlier,there were apprehensions that farmers might have to drop groundnut completely this season due to delayed monsoon. But continuous rain (between 3 and 30 inches) over the last 10 days has resulted in sowing over 15 lakh hectors,only two lakh hectors less than its average cultivation area.

Also,cotton cultivation has been completed on almost its average mark of 13 lakh hectors,according to figures provided by the Saurashtra regional office,Agriculture.

In rest of the areas,pulses,soyabean,sesame and grass have been sown.

Among the districts,Junagadh has completed 95 per cent sowing,Jamnagar 94 per cent,Porbandar 91 per cent,Rajkot 88 per cent,Surendranagar 87 per cent and Kutch 41 per cent.
