The local unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded inquiry into allegations of including well-to-do families in the BPL list being prepared by the Urban Community Development Department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. It has also demanded to cancel the list.

CPI district secretary Jethalal Gambhukar has alleged that UCD staff were found charging money from the poor for giving them the BPL survey form. They alleged the staff also gave an impression to the poor applicants that those filling the form would also get into the BPL list automatically. Instead of conducting a door-to-door survey of BPL families, the UCD staff distributed forms randomly and charged money from the applicants giving them false hopes. It has also demanded cancellation of the criterion of issuing BPL status to the families having monthly income of Rs 500.
