Premature leopard cubs die in Dangs

Wildlife activists blame forest officials for deaths

Two newborn leopard cubs,found at a village in the Dangs district,died on Friday. Forest officials believe that due to their premature delivery,the cubs didn’t survive,saying that a post mortem report is awaited.

However,local wildlife activists blamed the forest officials alleging that they didn’t make arrangement to let the leopard take away the cubs.

A day before,the cubs were found at Sukhmal village,a female leopard was spotted near a house in the village on Thursday morning. Later,locals informed the forest officials about the incident.

According to forest officials,the female leopard was pregnant and came out of the jungle in search of food. While she was hunting a cat she delivered the cubs. Officials said that they waited for 24 hours for the leopard to come and take away the cub but she didn’t appear.

A veterinary doctor,D B Patel,was called for the examination of the cubs. However,one of them died in forest officials’ custody on Friday morning,while another one died by the afternoon. Despite repeated attempts district forest officer,west,B Suchindra couldn’t be contacted.
