Policemen make up 25 per cent of those arrested under the Anti-Corruption Act (1988) in the state,it has been revealed. According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) there is an increase in the number of complaints registered against police officers.

Till September this year, the ACB has nabbed 41 policemen of various ranks of the total 128 arrested by them. Last year,43 policemen figured among the 166 arrested by the Bureau in year 2008. The ACB records of the last three years show that the maximum cases were reported against Class II and Class III police officers.

ACB officers said the maximum number of complaints against policemen is related to harassment at police stations or in custody.

ACB Director RMS Brar said: “Nearly 20 to 25 per cent of bribery cases are reported annually against police officers. People now choose to complain instead of giving bribe to the police officers.”

Tirth Raj,Joint Director,ACB,said,“We are always extra careful when there is a bribery case against an officer. The process of trapping a policeman is carried out as per the law but if we know that the officer is smart,we assign the task to a team of officers not known to the accused.”

ACB officers said as the policemen are aware of the use of phenothylene powder as a trap, they ask people to keep cash on the table. During court cases, they argue that they didn’t even touch the money to escape from the punishment.

ACB officers said in most cases the police officers use tea stall owners, security guards,or even junior officers as the victims to escape the arrest.
