Police to probe 12 deaths in state with ‘links’ to tantrik who died in custody

A man who died in custody on Sunday had confessed his involvement in at least a dozen murder cases in the state that the police are now going to probe, officers of Ahmedabad City Police said on Tuesday.

The police custody of Navalsinh Rathod, a tantrik (occultist), was supposed to end on December 10. However, he died within four days of questioning at Sarkhej police station.

Rathod fell ill in the custody and died before he could be taken to hospital, said officials.

Rathod, 42, was arrested on December 3 for allegedly conspiring to murder a businessman, Abhijeetsinh Bharatkumar Rajput.

Police was informed about Rathod’s alleged involvement in the case by his driver, Jigar Gohil, who suspected the occultist’s involvement in the killing of his own brother in the past, police said.

Rathod is suspected to have caused the death of Jigar’s brother Vivek Bhanu Gohil, in Gandhinagar; a family of three in Surendranagar; another three people in Rajkot; one in Morbi; one in Kutch; and three members of his own family, including grandmother, mother, and uncle in Surendranagar.

“We will be investigating all the cases. Rathod confessed to 12 murders. We have found where the Accidental Death  reports had been filed in all these cases. We will be sending our reports to all the police stations concerned so that the cases can be investigated properly,” Inspector RK Dhuliya of Sarkhej police said.

Police suspect that Rathod used Sodium Nitrate to kill a number of his victims.
