Police round up 90 Youth Congress workers

More than 90 Youth Congress workers were rounded up by the police while staging a demonstration to condemn the hooch tragedy that has taken a toll of more than 120 lives in the city in the last five days.

According to Congress leaders,the police cracked down on the party workers around 4.20 pm and rounded them up. Later,they were taken to the Shahibaug Police Commissionerate.

The youth wing of the party had staged similar programmes at Gandhinagar,Mehsana,Junagadh,Bhavnagar and Bhuj,besides Ahmedabad,demanding strict action against the bootleggers.

Gujarat Pradesh Youth Congress president Indravijaysinh Gohil claimed that the agitation received good support and all the educational institutions observed strike.

Gohil alleged that the police resorted to highhandedness on the Youth Congress and NSUI workers near Induchacha’s statue and rounded up the workers though they were staging a peaceful protest.

The Youth Congress activists also torched the effigies of Minister of State for Home Amit Shah for his failure to enforce prohibition and stop the flow of spurious liquor in the state.

Meanwhile,the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee has planned demonstrations at Karamsad,Bardoli and Porbandar on July 14 to demand Amit Shah’s resignation.
