Police probe complaint against Teesta,write to Gulbarg Society members

It further states that the police are investigating the complaint and “you are advised to maintain status quo in the society till further instructions”.

Following complaints by members of Gulbarg Society that Sabrang Trust and the NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP),run by activists Javed Anand and Teesta Setalvad respectively,were involved in misppropriation of funds collected from foreign donors in the name of converting the residential complex into a “riot museum”,the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Ahmedabad police has sent a letter to the chairman and secretary of the housing society asking them to maintain status quo.

The letter sent by SOG police sub-inspector C B Gamit and addressed to the chairman and secretary of Gulbarg Society states,“…Sabrang Trust and CJP are receiving foreign and local donations in the name of providing assistance to the riot victims and to develop the Gulberg Society into a museum. Complainants have also alleged these organsations are involved in misappropriation of funds.”

It further states that the police are investigating the complaint and “you are advised to maintain status quo in the society till further instructions”.

While confirming that he has received the letter,Firoze Gulzar Pathan,chairman of the society,said he would send a reply in a few days. He said there had been a lot of misunderstanding over the whole issue. Gamit did not respond to calls.

On February 28,2002,69 people,including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri were killed by rioters in Gulbarg Society.
