Modi is expected to reach Ekta Nagar later Thursday evening, where he is likely to inaugurate development projects worth Rs 1,220 crore around the Statue of Unity. Unseasonal rain forced Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two-day visit to his home state Gujarat, to travel by road from Vadodara to Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), where he will preside over the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations at the Statue of Unity to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Modi’s convoy left Vadodara International Airport, where he landed from Bihar, for Ekta Nagar — about 90 km away — as rain continued to lash the region Thursday. The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations will be held Friday.
With heavy rainfall reported in Vadodara and Narmada districts, the Prime Minister opted for road travel instead of a helicopter. His convoy, accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, moved under heavy police deployment as the administration and security agencies had anticipated the change in plan and made necessary arrangements, senior police officials said.
Modi is expected to reach Ekta Nagar later Thursday evening, where he is likely to inaugurate development projects worth Rs 1,220 crore around the Statue of Unity. However, officials said his evening schedule may be curtailed due to rain, including a planned skit on Patel’s life. A senior official said the Prime Minister will stay overnight at the circuit house in Kevadia.
On Friday, Modi will preside over the Ekta Parade and address the nation. He will then interact with officer trainees of the 100th Common Foundation Course under Aarambh 7.0 before returning to Delhi via Vadodara.
Earlier Thursday afternoon, Directors General of Police from various states and heads of paramilitary forces arrived at Ekta Nagar to attend the Ekta Diwas parade.
