Asserting that he was a member of the community first and a political leader later, Patel wrote in his letter, dated April 18, 2016, expressing profound unhappiness over police “excesses” on local Patidars and jail bharo participants and cases under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code. “This is a serious matter and causing immense damage to our government. Because of this, the Patidars in the BJP have suffered a lot,” he wrote, asking the CM to “wake up” at a time when she was leading the state to an all-round development, and bring an amicable end to the stir. Patel wrote that if the Jat community in Haryana could be given reservation by the government there, why couldn’t it be given in Gujarat? “I personally support the reservation for all Patidars and high castes,” he wrote.

He urged the CM to see to it that no such incident were repeated in the future. He made a fervent plea to Patel to ensure “sab ka vikas” by taking along all communities together and march forward on the path of development.
